My grandmother got really excited when I asked her about this rocking chair, which belonged to my great grandparents. There are so many stories associated with it. One is that my grandmother had a suitor who came to visit her after the Korean War. He'd had a beautiful painting made of her and brought it to give to her. My grandfather was at the house then and when this man showed up, he refused to get out of this rocking chair. My grandmother took the painting inside and showed it to her parents, and when she came out, my grandfather was still sitting there. It was like a staring contest. Eventually the other man left. I guess it worked. She also told me that my mother and my aunt used to have races in the chair across the front porch of the house. It was always painted grey but when I was born, my grandfather painted it white and gave it to my mother, so she could rock me in it. It needs a new seat, but it's here to stay.
