In The City
<< Week 23 >>

Anticdotally, I've noticed a serious rise in homeless teenagers in Philadelphia in the last year. Two months ago Anne's grandmother (and sole caretaker) died, leaving $135,000 in hospital bills and nothing else. Faced with homelessness in Horsham PA, Anne moved to Philadelphia where life on the streets is easier. She's teaching water aerobics at a retirement home but the pay is really inconsistent. (She gets paid $2 for each person who shows up.) The day I met her she'd made $4 there. I saw her again today and she'd made $12. The youth hostel where she's staying only costs $35 a week but after work, she's still asking for change to make it up. She's got a full time prospect at a coffee shop, but they've been putting her off for more than a month now.
